The Great Pyramid Race

Today is the day of the annual Great Pyramid Race!

This annual race from the local town of Gordonvale - up and down the 922m high pyramid mountain, then back to Gordonvale, began 53 years ago when 2 cane farmers decided to race to the top and back to settle and argument!!

The race is described as a :

“Never ending uphill scramble and controlled downhill freefall”

The track is steep, and very challenging!

My husband and I have run this race for the past 2 years and today will be our third!
The first time we 'raced' we completed - in more or less last place, in 3 hours and 15 mins, but were very happy to have finished - and in doing so inspired many others to try it themselves!

This year we are getting faster - but are sill towards the back of the pack of 150 runners!  I'm aiming for a time of 2hrs 20 mins.  In training I've done 2 hrs 28 mins - so figure I need to push myself that little bit more on race day!  Wish me luck!

We enjoy the race, and it gives us a focus to keep fit each year!

So think of me this afternoon when I'll be pushing myself up and down the mountain!

I hope you all have a lovely weekend too!

  3. Hi Jill, I was thinking of you today.....I hope your race went according to plan. It was such a beautiful day. I think anyone that runs up and down for the race is amazing. Oh....and the fact that you have to run around the block first before you even get to leave to head to the Pyramid.
